Sandy Pines Golf Course serves DeMotte in Jasper County, in the flat, sandy terrain of the Kankakee River plain that once supported one of North America's great inland marshes. Before drainage in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this area was the Grand Kankakee Marsh — a vast wetland ecosystem that extended across Jasper and adjoining counties. The sandy soils that gave both DeMotte's course and the surrounding area their character are remnants of that ancient lakebed and river delta geology. Jasper County today is agricultural, with DeMotte serving as a small commercial center for the surrounding farm community.
