Portales Country Club sits in Portales, the Roosevelt County seat and home of Eastern New Mexico University, about 18 miles south of Clovis on the flat Llano Estacado. ENMU gives the town a university presence that tempers the otherwise agricultural and oil-patch character of the surrounding region. At roughly 4,000 feet, wind is a reliable companion, and the open terrain provides little natural protection from prevailing westerlies. The country club is a private institution serving a community where such clubs have traditionally been the primary social anchoring point outside of church and school.
