Originally developed as a retirement and resort community beginning in the 1970s, the village has grown to house more than fourteen thousand permanent residents in a comprehensive residential development with eight golf courses, multiple lakes, and extensive recreational infrastructure. The community's golf circuit—eight courses named in a Spanish explorer theme—represents one of the most comprehensive private-community golf programs in the country, sustaining a golf-centered lifestyle for residents whose daily schedules are organized around the game.
