Glencoe is one of Lake County's most exclusive North Shore communities, a small village of roughly 9,000 occupying blufftop land above Lake Michigan between Winnetka and Highland Park. The Chicago Botanic Garden — technically in Glencoe — draws over a million visitors annually to a horticultural campus that has become one of the region's cultural landmarks. Three golf clubs operate in or adjacent to Glencoe: Glencoe Golf Club, Lake Shore Country Club, and Skokie Country Club — the last of which hosted the 1922 U.S. Open. The concentration of elite private golf here reflects the North Shore's historical pattern of establishing clubs before suburban development arrived to constrain land availability.
