Stockton is a village in Jo Daviess County, set in the hilly far-northwest corner of Illinois far from the Chicago metro. The Driftless-area terrain of wooded ridges and valleys gives this unglaciated region a scenic, rugged character distinct from the flatter prairie to the east. Stockton grew as a small market town and retains that feel, set amid the dramatic country near Galena. Its location places it well outside the suburban growth of the metro, in one of the most scenic stretches of the state. Golf is well represented here, with more than one course set among the wooded hills and valleys that define the area. For golfers, Stockton offers rounds in the rugged northwest corner of Illinois, where the Driftless region's ridges and valleys shape a landscape unlike most of the state, in the scenic country surrounding nearby Galena.
