Golf in Waterloo

Waterloo is the seat of Monroe County in southwestern Illinois, a city whose German-American heritage runs deep — the county was settled largely by German Catholic immigrants in the nineteenth century, and Waterloo's biergartens, festivals, and community institutions still reflect that ancestry. The city sits on the upland plateau above the Mississippi floodplain, looking west toward the Missouri Ozarks across the river. Monroe County's landscape combines agricultural fields, oak woodland draws, and the dramatic bluffline above the Mississippi to create some of the most visually distinctive terrain in Illinois. Four golf courses serve Waterloo and its immediate surroundings, a concentration that reflects the city's size and the recreational expectations of its growing residential population.
