Lawrence, the Douglas County seat and home of the University of Kansas, is arguably the state's most culturally vibrant city — a college town with intellectual energy, a fiercely liberal political identity, and a downtown on Massachusetts Street that draws visitors from across the region. The city was founded by New England abolitionists in 1854 and paid for that identity in blood: Quantrill's 1863 raid killed roughly 200 civilian men and boys in one of the Civil War's worst atrocities. Today's Lawrence is a city of art galleries, independent restaurants, and Big 12 athletics, set in the rolling terrain of the Kansas River valley. Eagle Bend Golf Course along the Kaw serves the community's recreational golfers alongside the university-adjacent options.
