Liberal, the Seward County seat in the extreme southwest corner of Kansas, occupies a remote corner of the state where the Cimarron River once marked the boundary between promise and peril on the historic Santa Fe Trail's Cimarron Cutoff. Today Liberal's economy is driven by agriculture — particularly grain sorghum and cattle — and by Tyson Foods' large processing facility that has made the city demographically diverse. The annual Pancake Day race, held simultaneously with a race in Olney, England, since 1950, gives Liberal an eccentric international connection. Two golf courses serve the community in terrain that is flat, wind-scoured, and genuinely open High Plains country.
