Golf in Madison

Madison is a Somerset County community on the Kennebec River where the valley narrows between forested ridges before widening into the flats near Wesserunsett Lake. The town's economic history is tied to the Kennebec — a paper-mill community that, like many in central Maine, has navigated the transitions of Maine's forest-products industry over recent decades. Wesserunsett Lake and the surrounding smaller ponds provide fishing and boating access that supplement the town's recreation infrastructure. The Kennebec itself, wide and powerful through this section of the valley, has been the defining geographic feature since Abenaki peoples and early European settlers arrived in the region. Lakewood Golf Course, with 18 holes near the lake, is among the more substantial recreational facilities in this part of the Kennebec Valley.
