Clayton is a fast-growing town in Johnston County, in the southeastern Triangle metropolitan area. Situated on the Neuse River southeast of Raleigh, Clayton is one of the Triangle's outer-ring suburbs along the U.S. 70 corridor between Raleigh and Goldsboro. Johnston County has grown significantly as a Triangle exurb, and Clayton in particular has attracted substantial residential development as the metro's southeastern expansion continues along the U.S. 70 and NC 42 corridors. The town's combination of affordability, proximity to Raleigh, and Johnston County's less developed landscape has made it one of the faster-growing communities in the Triangle.
