1 golf course in Atkinson, Nebraska.
Atkinson in Holt County is the regional hub for north-central Nebraska's ranch country, a community of roughly 1,200 that takes its name from the U.S. Army general who established the first Fort Atkinson along the Missouri River. Holt County is one of the largest counties in Nebraska and among the most cattle-rich in the nation. The Atkinson-Stuart Country Club serves both communities, pooling resources in the practical fashion that rural Nebraska institutions have always managed. The O'Neill Irish heritage nearby adds cultural flavor to this stretch of the northern Sandhills transition. Highway 20 running through Atkinson connects the northern Sandhills communities in a loose east-west corridor, and Atkinson's position along it keeps the city relevant as a supply stop for the ranching economy. The golf club's dual-community model is a practical solution for two small towns that are stronger together.
