Bridgeville occupies the South Hills of Allegheny County along Route 50, one of the primary corridors connecting Pittsburgh to the southwestern suburbs. The borough is compact — barely a square mile — but the surrounding municipalities of Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park, and Scott Township form a substantial suburban mass that developed rapidly after the Fort Pitt Tunnel opened in 1960 and made downtown Pittsburgh accessible in minutes. The South Hills have a different character from the North Hills: somewhat flatter, more commercially developed along the major corridors, with the Chartiers Creek watershed providing the most significant topographic variety. Golf courses in the area occupy the valley margins and the land between the suburban grids, serving a large residential population that has made the South Hills one of Allegheny County's densest suburban zones. Bridgeville's position at the junction of several South Hills communities makes it a practical base for exploring western Pennsylvania golf.
