Exeter Borough sits in Luzerne County on the east bank of the Susquehanna River in the Wyoming Valley, between Wilkes-Barre and the Pittston-Scranton corridor. The Wyoming Valley's history is dense with consequence: the Wyoming Massacre of 1778, the anthracite coal boom that followed settlement, and the long industrial contraction that has defined the valley's twentieth-century story. Exeter's river-bank position places it in the densely developed valley floor where borough boundaries touch each other with minimal rural transition. Luzerne County has maintained a working recreational golf culture through the post-industrial decades, and the Wyoming Valley's courses serve communities that have transitioned from coal-economy working class to a more diverse service-sector population. The Exeter area draws from both sides of the river through the Kingston and West Side bridges.
