Hermitage is a Mercer County city in the Shenango Valley, adjacent to the Sharon-Farrell industrial corridor that was once one of the most densely concentrated steel-producing areas outside of Pittsburgh. Sharon Steel and the Republic Steel operations that lined the Shenango River have been gone for decades, but Hermitage has maintained a commercial and residential character stronger than many comparable industrial-legacy communities. The Shenango Valley sits at the junction of Pennsylvania and Ohio — Youngstown, Ohio lies just across the state line, and the two communities' fates have been intertwined since the steel era. Hermitage's position as the Shenango Valley's residential and commercial hub gives it a market that extends into both Mercer County's agricultural townships and across the Ohio border into Mahoning County.
