Graniteville is a community in Aiken County, in the western SC Midlands near the Georgia border, adjacent to the city of Aiken. Graniteville has a significant place in South Carolina industrial history as the site of William Gregg's 1845 Graniteville Manufacturing Company, one of the earliest successful textile mills in the antebellum South. The community is also notable for a 2005 train collision that released chlorine gas, one of the worst industrial accidents in SC history. Graniteville's three golf courses serve the Aiken County community in the western SC Midlands.
