Lead is a Lawrence County Black Hills community whose entire identity is shaped by the Homestake Gold Mine, which operated from 1876 to 2002 as the largest and deepest gold mine in North America. The mine produced over forty million ounces of gold, and the open pit remains a dominant feature of the townscape. Today the Sanford Underground Research Facility occupies the mine's deepest shafts for particle physics experiments requiring extreme shielding. Lead's canyon setting, Victorian-era architecture, and remarkable transition from mining town to science destination make it one of the Black Hills' most compelling communities. The Sanford Lab's particle physics experiments in Homestake's deepest shafts have brought international scientists to a community that once sent gold to the U.S. Treasury.
