Francis E. Warren Air Force Base is one of the nation's oldest continuously active military installations, established as Fort D.A. Russell in 1867 to protect the Union Pacific Railroad's construction crews. Today Warren hosts the 90th Missile Wing, responsible for ICBM operations across Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado. The base's Victorian-era brick buildings, many still in use, constitute the largest collection of nineteenth-century brick military architecture in the nation and are designated as a National Historic Landmark. The base's location adjacent to Cheyenne makes it an integral part of the capital city's community and economy. The Warren ICBM and Heritage Museum on the base grounds preserves the history of American nuclear deterrence strategy, and its exhibits trace Warren's transformation from a frontier cavalry post to a Cold War missile operations center.
