Griffin Bell Golf Course is in Americus, Sumter County, in southwest Georgia. Americus is the county seat of Sumter County, in the southwest Georgia coastal plain, known as the home of Jimmy Carter — the 39th President of the United States grew up in nearby Plains, Sumter County. Americus is also home to the Habitat for Humanity International headquarters, founded here in 1976. The course is named for Griffin Bell, a former US Attorney General with Georgia connections. Americus is also home to Georgia Southwestern State University.
