Americus is the county seat of Sumter County in southwest Georgia, a small city in the southwest Georgia Coastal Plain. The city is the home of Habitat for Humanity International, the global nonprofit housing organization founded here in 1976. Americus is also home to Georgia Southwestern State University and the Andersonville National Historic Site is nearby — the site of the Confederate prisoner of war camp where thousands of Union soldiers died during the Civil War. The city serves as the commercial hub for Sumter County and the surrounding rural agricultural counties.
