Jekyll Island is a barrier island owned by the state of Georgia and managed as a state park, one of the four Golden Isles off the Georgia coast. From 1886 to 1942, Jekyll Island was the exclusive private retreat of some of America's wealthiest families — the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Morgans, and Pulitzers among them — who built the Jekyll Island Club and elaborate winter cottages now preserved as a National Historic Landmark District. The state acquired the island in 1947 and has maintained it as a public beach and recreational destination.
