Maryland National Golf Course occupies the farmland of the Middletown Valley in Frederick County, where the South Mountain ridge creates a dramatic backdrop to the west and Catoctin Mountain defines the eastern horizon. Middletown sits in one of Maryland's most historically significant valleys—Confederate and Union forces clashed here repeatedly during the 1862 Maryland Campaign, and the Battle of South Mountain was fought on the ridge above.
