Middletown is a Frederick County town in the Middletown Valley, a broad agricultural plain between South Mountain to the west and Catoctin Mountain to the east—one of the most topographically dramatic and historically significant landscapes in Maryland. The 1862 Battle of South Mountain was fought on the ridge above, and Confederate forces retreated through this valley after Antietam. Maryland National Golf Course and Richland Golf Club both occupy the valley floor with mountain backdrop views that few Maryland golf settings can match. Middletown's small-town character—brick main street, agricultural heritage, Civil War history—gives it a context well beyond its modest size, and the surrounding countryside of preserved farms and mountain ridgelines makes it one of the state's most appealing golf settings.
