Gully Golf Course serves Sanford, a small Midland County community on the Tittabawassee River that experienced a devastating flood in May 2020 when the Edenville and Sanford dams failed during a record rainfall event, draining Sanford Lake and inundating much of the community's residential and recreational infrastructure. The 2020 dam breach—a catastrophic failure that destroyed the lake that had defined Sanford's resort and recreational identity for over a century—has forced the community through an ongoing recovery and landscape transformation that is still working itself out. Gully Golf Course occupies the gully terrain of the Sanford area that was shaped by the same watercourse landscape that made the dams and the resulting lake possible, and the course continues to serve the Sanford community through its post-flood recovery.
