Saint Louis's identity was shaped in part by the Michigan PBB contamination crisis of the 1970s, when a chemical mix-up at the Velsicol Chemical Company resulted in the widespread contamination of Michigan livestock with polybrominated biphenyl—an industrial accident that devastated the agricultural economy of the surrounding counties and left a lasting mark on the community. Hidden Oaks provides golf in the oaken terrain that gives the course its name in a mid-Michigan community that has worked to rebuild its agricultural and commercial identity in the decades since the PBB crisis.
