Sauganash Golf Club takes its name from Sauganash—a Potawatomi leader of mixed French-Indian heritage who played a significant role in early nineteenth-century Great Lakes diplomacy—honoring the Indigenous cultural history of the St. Joseph River valley where Three Rivers was built at the confluence of three rivers. The St. Joseph River corridor through this part of Michigan was important Potawatomi territory, and the removal of these communities in the 1840s is one of the defining events of the region's human history. A course bearing the Sauganash name in Three Rivers connects the game to the landscape's deeper story, in a part of Michigan where the rivers, lakes, and agricultural land were shaped by Indigenous use long before European settlement arrived.
