Golf in Ajo

Ajo is a small community in the Sonoran Desert of southwestern Pima County, in the remote open desert west of Tucson near the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and the Mexican border. The community has ties to copper mining in the region, with the open-pit copper mine that once dominated the economy now part of the area's industrial record. Ajo's remote location in the open desert, the proximity to the border, and the national monument terrain give it a distinct character as one of the more isolated communities in southern Arizona. The Sonoran Desert landscape around Ajo has saguaro cactus, ocotillo, and the distinctive organ pipe cactus that gives the national monument its name. One course serves the Ajo community in the flat Sonoran Desert of southwestern Pima County.
