Waipahu is a community in the Pearl City area of central Oahu with deep roots in the plantation labor history of the island's sugar industry—the Oahu Sugar Company's mill dominated the community's economic life for decades, and the plantation heritage is preserved in the Hawaii's Plantation Village museum. Two golf facilities serve the Waipahu community: Ted Makalena Golf Course, named for the Hawaiian professional golfer who was a Waipahu native, reflects the working-class community's tradition of recreational access, while Waikele Golf Club serves the newer planned community that has developed in the former cane fields adjacent to the historic plantation town.
