Decatur is the seat of Macon County and one of central Illinois's most significant agricultural processing cities, home to major Archer Daniels Midland and Tate & Lyle operations that process corn and soybeans from the surrounding prairie. Lake Decatur, an impoundment of the Sangamon River, anchors the city's recreation landscape and shapes its southern edge. Abraham Lincoln practiced law briefly in Decatur before moving to Springfield, and the city claims a place in Lincoln's biography at a state Republican convention held here in 1860. Four golf facilities serve the county: the Country Club of Decatur, Red Tail Run, Hickory Point, and South Side Country Club.
