Golf in Godfrey

Godfrey is an unincorporated Madison County community north of Alton, occupying a broad swath of bluff-and-ravine terrain along the Illinois side of the Mississippi River. Monticello College (now Lewis and Clark Community College) was founded here, and the community has a longer educational tradition than its unincorporated status might suggest. The Piasa Bird — a legendary creature depicted by Native Americans on the bluffs near Alton — is part of the cultural mythology of this stretch of river country. Godfrey's terrain carries the same bluff character as Alton, with elevations and creek drainages that give golf here a distinctive setting.
