Golf in Gretna

The west bank of Jefferson Parish is older and denser than the suburban communities that expanded northward after the lakefront drainage projects, and Gretna is its governmental center. Sitting across the Mississippi from the Lower Garden District, Gretna has its own historical identity separate from New Orleans proper — German immigrant settlement in the nineteenth century, then Italian, giving the west bank a demographic character distinct from the Creole east bank. Two courses serve the Gretna area: Stonebridge Golf Club and Timberlane Country Club, offering different price points and membership structures to a dense suburban population. The Mississippi is visible from much of this area, an ever-present geographic anchor.
