Pointe Coupee Parish takes its name from the French for "cut point" — a reference to a historical shortcut the Mississippi River cut across a bend, leaving an oxbow and rearranging the local geography. Simmesport sits at the parish's southern edge where the Atchafalaya and Red rivers converge, a location of hydrological significance in a state where river management is a perpetual challenge. Prison View Golf Course occupies one of the more bluntly named addresses in American golf: the course is located adjacent to a state correctional facility, and the name makes no attempt to obscure that relationship. The novelty of the name brings attention, but the course serves a genuinely local function in a small community.
