Chevy Chase sits on the Maryland side of the District of Columbia line in Montgomery County, one of the wealthiest and most architecturally coherent planned communities in the country. Founded as a streetcar suburb in the 1890s by Senator Francis Newlands, it was built around two of Washington's most venerable private golf institutions: Chevy Chase Club, whose history stretches back to 1892, and Columbia Country Club, which has hosted USGA championships. The twin clubs define the social and recreational fabric of a community where elm-lined streets and red-brick houses project studied, understated elegance. The Rock Creek Park border to the east provides natural separation from the city while maintaining easy access to the capital.
