Cockeysville in Baltimore County occupies the upper Gunpowder River valley along the York Road corridor north of the Baltimore Beltway. The community grew around limestone quarrying—the Maryland Limestone Belt runs through this area, and the resulting rolling karst terrain gives local golf courses genuine topographic interest. Three clubs serve Cockeysville's recreational golf market: Fox Hollow, Hayfields Country Club, and Hillendale Country Club. The NCR Trail, a former rail corridor converted to recreational use, passes through the valley and connects Cockeysville to Towson and, eventually, to the Pennsylvania line. The Loch Raven Reservoir watershed forms the community's southern boundary, preserving significant open space and contributing to the naturalistic quality that distinguishes northern Baltimore County's suburban character from the denser communities south of the Beltway.
