Newry is an Oxford County mountain community at the Sunday River ski area in the Mahoosuc Range, one of New England's most popular and challenging ski destinations. The Androscoggin River flows through the valley below the ski terrain, and the ridgelines visible from the resort include some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in western Maine. The Appalachian Trail crosses the Mahoosuc Range above Newry, and the Mahoosuc Notch section is widely considered the most technically difficult mile of the entire 2,190-mile trail. Sunday River Golf Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., brings the resort's mountain ambitions to the summer season — a full 18-hole course that makes Newry a genuine four-season outdoor recreation destination.
