Crystal Downs Country Club is among Michigan's most celebrated golf institutions, a Benzie County lakeside club whose Alister MacKenzie and Perry Maxwell design from 1929 is consistently ranked among the finest golf courses in the world and the best in Michigan. The course occupies a remarkable setting on the bluffs above Crystal Lake in one of northern Michigan's most naturally beautiful lake settings—the clear, turquoise water visible from multiple holes on the bluff terrain—and MacKenzie's routing through the wildly varied landscape of moraines, dunes, and bluff terrain represents some of his most creative design work outside of Augusta National. Crystal Downs is a private club serving a small, exclusive membership that has preserved the course's character and conditions through decades of national recognition.
