Oscoda is an Iosco County township on the Lake Huron shoreline at the mouth of the Au Sable River, a community defined by two strong threads: the world-famous Au Sable River fly-fishing that made it a sporting destination, and the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base whose closure in 1993 transformed the community's economy. The conversion of the Wurtsmith property into a general aviation airport and mixed-use development has been an ongoing project, and Oscoda continues to develop its identity as a northern Michigan outdoor recreation and lakefront community. Multiple golf courses serve the Oscoda area's combination of year-round residents and the outdoor recreation visitors drawn to the Au Sable and Lake Huron.
