Golf in Portage

Portage is a Kalamazoo County city that functions as the more suburban-commercial counterpart to the Kalamazoo urban core, a community on the south side of the Kalamazoo metropolitan area whose Pfizer pharmaceutical research campus (now part of the continuing pharmaceutical legacy of the area) and large-scale retail development along Westnedge Avenue have made it the primary commercial destination for the metropolitan area. Portage's incorporation as a city in 1963 allowed it to control its own commercial development, and the result has been one of the more commercially successful suburban cities in southwestern Michigan. Multiple golf courses serve the Portage area's suburban and commercial market.
