Asheboro is the county seat of Randolph County, in the central NC Piedmont between the Triangle and the Triad. The city is best known as the home of the North Carolina Zoo, the largest natural habitat zoo in the world, set in the Uwharrie hills south of Asheboro. Randolph County is a mid-Piedmont county between Guilford and Montgomery counties, with Asheboro serving as its commercial and governmental center on U.S. 64. The Uwharrie Mountains to the south provide the most rugged terrain in the central Piedmont, and the area's combination of zoo, lakes, and Uwharrie National Forest makes Randolph County a recreational destination.
