Badin is a small company town in Stanly County, in the NC Piedmont east of Albemarle. The town was built in the early twentieth century by ALCOA to house workers at an aluminum smelting plant powered by the Yadkin River hydroelectric system. Stanly County is in the south-central Piedmont east of Rowan County and south of Cabarrus County, with Albemarle serving as the county seat. Badin's unique industrial heritage as a planned aluminum company town distinguishes it from other small Piedmont communities in the Uwharrie foothills area.
