Winston-Salem is the county seat of Forsyth County, a major city and the western anchor of the NC Triad. The city's dual identity reflects its origins as two separate towns: Winston, founded as a tobacco manufacturing center anchored by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and Salem, the historic Moravian settlement founded in 1766. The Old Salem Historic District preserves the Moravian community's eighteenth-century character and is one of the most authentic living history sites in the American South. Wake Forest University relocated to Winston-Salem in 1956 and is now one of the city's defining institutions. Six golf facilities serve the Winston-Salem community, including Forsyth Country Club and Reynolds Park Golf Course.
