Golf in Big Springs

Big Springs is a small Deuel County community in southwestern Nebraska along I-80, serving the agricultural and ranching economy of this sparsely populated stretch of the High Plains. The South Platte River flows near here before joining the North Platte further east. Big Springs is notable as the site of the largest train robbery in Union Pacific history, which occurred here in 1877. Sedgwick County Golf Association offers recreational golf in a remote corner of the state. The 1877 train robbery at Big Springs — in which the Bass Gang stole gold from a Union Pacific express — briefly made the community notorious along the railroad corridor. Big Springs today is a quiet, function-focused agricultural community, and the golf association serves the recreational needs of that straightforward agricultural economy.
