Golf in Apollo

Apollo sits on the Kiskiminetas River where it bends through Armstrong County, fifteen miles northeast of Pittsburgh's outer suburbs in the hill country that defines western Pennsylvania's river corridor communities. The Kiskiminetas — locals shorten it to the Kiski — joins the Allegheny just downstream, tying Apollo to the network of river valleys that channeled industrial development across this corner of the state. The borough saw early nuclear history: the Shippingport Atomic Power Station, the first commercial nuclear plant in the United States, operated downriver in Beaver County, and a weapons-grade nuclear fuel plant operated in Apollo itself from the 1950s through the 1980s. That complicated legacy sits alongside a more conventional western Pennsylvania small-town character of ethnic neighborhoods, church halls, and recreational institutions built around the industrial workforce. Golf in the Apollo area draws from the Kiski Valley communities and from the Westmoreland County townships to the south.
