Freeport is an Armstrong County borough at the confluence of the Allegheny River and Buffalo Creek, a river town whose character has been shaped by the waterways that meet here and the industrial and agricultural economies they once supported. Armstrong County's Allegheny River corridor is one of western Pennsylvania's more scenic stretches — the river bends through wooded ridgelines between Pittsburgh and Kittanning, and Freeport's position at the Buffalo Creek mouth gives it a particular geographic identity within that landscape. Two golf courses serve the Freeport area: the family-operated Laube Golf Course and the River Forest Country Club, each taking something from the landscape's river-and-forest character in their names. The river towns of Armstrong County have maintained recreational golf as a community institution through the same long post-industrial transition that has reshaped western Pennsylvania more broadly.
