Beaufort is the county seat of Beaufort County, one of the oldest towns in South Carolina, founded in 1711 on Port Royal Island in the heart of the Sea Island Lowcountry. The city is known for its remarkably intact antebellum district along the Beaufort River, including some of the finest examples of Antebellum architecture in the American South, and for its role in the Civil War Reconstruction period when it became a center of Gullah Geechee culture and freedmen's education. Beaufort is also associated with writers including Pat Conroy, who set much of his fiction in the Low Country of Beaufort County. The city's golf courses serve both the local community and visitors to the Sea Island Lowcountry.
