Daufuskie Island is a remote barrier island in Beaufort County, accessible only by ferry from Hilton Head Island or the Calibogue Sound, between Hilton Head and the Savannah River mouth at the Georgia border. The island is known for its deep Gullah Geechee cultural heritage, a legacy of the enslaved African and African-American population who worked the island's cotton and oyster industries and remained on the island in relative isolation after the Civil War. Daufuskie was brought to national attention by Pat Conroy's memoir The Water is Wide, about his experience teaching on the island in the early 1970s. Today Daufuskie has both a surviving Gullah community and a luxury resort development landscape, including the Haig Point and Melrose golf communities on its Atlantic and sound shorelines.
