Pawleys Island is one of the oldest resort communities on the Southeast coast, in Georgetown County south of the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand. The barrier island is known for its unhurried character — rope hammocks have been made and sold here since the late 1800s — and for a coastal culture that values simplicity over commercial development. The mainland zone adjacent to Pawleys Island, along the Waccamaw Neck, has become one of the most golf-dense corridors in South Carolina, with nine courses in the Pawleys Island area ranging from public daily-fee layouts to private plantation clubs. The Pawleys Island corridor is a significant extension of the Grand Strand golf market south into Georgetown County.
