La Follette is the seat of Campbell County in upper East Tennessee, a small city in the coal-country corridor between Norris Lake to the south and the Cumberland Mountains to the north. The county's coal mining heritage shaped its economy and landscape for much of the 20th century, and the transition away from extraction has posed challenges common to Appalachian counties across the region. Norris Lake, the first reservoir built by the TVA in the 1930s, lies at Campbell County's southern edge and has generated a modest recreational economy around its clear-water shoreline. La Follette's position off U.S. Highway 25W makes it accessible but somewhat removed from the major traffic flows of the I-75 corridor. Golf in Campbell County serves a small regional population in a setting shaped equally by the Appalachian landscape and the economic legacy of the coal era.
