Golf in Unicoi

Unicoi is the seat of Unicoi County, a small city in the Unaka Mountain terrain of extreme northeastern Tennessee near the North Carolina border. The county is almost entirely forested mountain landscape, and the Nolichucky River gorge — one of the deepest river gorges in the eastern United States — defines the county's western edge. The Cherokee National Forest occupies much of Unicoi County's land area, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the county's highest ridgelines. Erwin, the actual population center, lies a few miles south, and Unicoi serves its administrative function in a county where the outdoor recreation economy — hiking, fishing, paddling — is the most visible sector beyond the limited manufacturing and agricultural base. Golf in this mountain setting occupies a distinctive landscape far from the lowland courses of Middle and West Tennessee.
