Lander is the Fremont County seat on the Popo Agie River at the base of the Wind River Range, widely regarded as one of America's premier outdoor recreation communities. The NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) headquarters here brings wilderness education students and instructors from around the world, and the surrounding Wind River Range — with the largest glaciers in the Rocky Mountains south of Alaska — draws mountaineers, backpackers, and climbers to some of the most spectacular wilderness in the continental United States. Lander's Sinks Canyon State Park, where the Popo Agie River disappears into a cave and re-emerges downstream, is a geological oddity that defines the area's distinctive character.
