The course's third hole—a 243-yard par three played over a lava-filled ocean inlet from an elevated tee—is one of the most photographed golf holes in the world and has defined the visual identity of Big Island resort golf for six decades. Built for the Laurance Rockefeller development of the original Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, the course established the template for the South Kohala resort corridor that now includes multiple championship courses in close proximity.
